As local governments across the U.S. crack down on illegal immigration, three states that proudly offer undocumented aliens driver’s licenses have seen a big surge in the number of cards issued to those who are not in the country legally.

New Mexico, Washington State and Utah have long allowed illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses and all three have seen a major increase in undocumented applicants since Arizona passed its immigration control law earlier this year. Hawaii also offers illegal immigrants driver’s licenses but was not featured in this particular analysis, which was conducted by a national news organization.

It reveals an astonishing 60% increase over last year in the rate of driver’s licenses issued to immigrants in New Mexico, Washington State and Utah during the 10 weeks that followed approval of Arizona’s measure. New Mexico issued 10,257 licenses to immigrants through the first six months of 2010, compared with 13,481 for all of 2009.

Utah gave 41,000 illegal immigrants driver’s licenses through the first week of June compared with 43,429 for all of 2008 (the state did not provide data for 2009) and Washington granted 3,200 licenses to people from outside the U.S. during the same period, surpassing the pace of 5,992 for all of 2009.

The states allow illegal immigrants to get licenses simply by not requiring proof of legal residency. Maryland ended the practice just last spring by denying licenses to motorists who can’t prove they’re in the country legally. Earlier this year Utah became the nation’s first state to offer a special class of driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants who will be ineligible to obtain the cards when new federal security standards kick in.

What is an Election Observer (formerly called poll watcher)? He or she is a person who goes to the polls and other locations both on and before Election Day. They observe the proceedings and document things they see that seem out of the ordinary.

Elections take place prior to our actual Election Day in nursing homes, retirement homes and community-based residential facilities. One observer from each political party is allowed at each of these locations. Call the municipal clerks in each county to find out where and when they have voting scheduled at these facilities.

Another place Election Observers may observe is in the municipal or county clerk’s office during “in-person absentee voting”. Many people call this “early voting” but it isn’t because your vote doesn’t get counted until Election Day.

Election Observers are also needed in the centralized count locations for absentee ballots. Not every community has this, call your municipal clerk for more information.

You can be an election observer anywhere in the state. So get ready to get out there and observe the vote.

The director general of the BBC admitted Thursday that his organisation had been guilty of a “massive bias to the left” but said “a completely different generation” of journalists now works at the broadcaster.

Mark Thompson told the right-of-centre Spectator magazine that there was an institutional bias when he joined the organisation, reinforcing the findings of a 2007 internal report which concluded that greater efforts were required to avoid liberal bias.

“In the BBC I joined 30 years ago, there was, in much of current affairs, in terms of people’s personal politics, which were quite vocal, a massive bias to the left,” Thompson said.

Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) said he plans to introduce legislation next year to force an audit of U.S. holdings of gold.

Paul, a longtime critic of the Federal Reserve and U.S. monetary policy, said he believes it’s “a possibility” that there might not actually be any gold in the vaults of Fort Knox or the New York Federal Reserve bank.

The libertarian lawmaker told Kitco News, a website tracking news about precious metals, that an audit was necessary to determine how much the U.S. maintains in gold reserves in case the government were to use gold to back the dollar.

“If there was no question about the gold being there, you think they would be anxious to prove gold is there,” he said.

“Our Federal Reserve admits to nothing, and they should prove all the gold is there. There is a reason to be suspicious and even if you are not suspicious why wouldn’t you have an audit?

“I think it is a possibility,” Paul said when asked if there was truth to rumors that there was actually no gold at Ft. Knox or the New York Fed.

Economists and business owners say they’ve never seen anything like it: The Bush tax cuts are expiring, health care reform is confusing, deficits are exploding, cap-and-trade is looming - and political leaders are too busy fighting among themselves to offer any reliable vision of the future.

Little wonder, then, that businesses are frozen, afraid to hire or make any other long-term plans.

“We’ve been operating for the last year and a half in conditions of perfect uncertainty,” said David J. Ward, president of Madison-based consulting firm NorthStar Economics Inc., adding that he has never before seen such economic doubt in his 45 years as an economist.

“Do you know what the estate tax rate is going to be next year?” he asks. “Do you know what the corporate income tax rate is going to be? Do we know what the personal income tax rate is going to be? Do we know any of a number of other issues? The answer is we don’t. And until we resolve that, the economy’s going nowhere.”

So as the political parties snipe at one another with midterm elections approaching, the nation’s gross domestic product is stumbling along at a 1.6% annual growth rate, according to figures released Friday. And the national unemployment rate is holding well above 9%.

“They’re not going to hire a lot of new people until they have a better sense of the direction the economy is going,” Ward said.

–SNIP– “In my opinion, Congress is paralyzed, and both parties are to blame,” said Joseph Daniels, economics professor and director of the Center for Global and Economic Studies at Marquette University, an economist for nearly 30 years. “I certainly can’t remember a period with this much uncertainty.”

George W. Bush has been the presidential equivalent of a punching bag. Before he left office, he was vilified for the war in the Middle East, the credit crisis and the housing crisis. Democrats ran against his persona and policies in the 2008 election and successfully painted the Republican nominee for President, Arizona Sen. John McCain, as his Doppelganger.

He was radioactive, and even Republicans viewed him as such. But these days, though he’s seemingly blamed for everything but bad weather by the left, Bush is making a comeback. As President Obama’s approval numbers slide, people are starting to see the man they once laughed at and loathed isn’t looking so bad.

Start with the economy. For all the finger-pointing backward, a Rasmussen survey released Aug. 3 shows that slightly more Americans, 48% of voters, now believe that Obama’s policies are to blame for the dour economy than the 47% who fault Bush.

Government agents can sneak onto your property in the middle of the night, put a GPS device on the bottom of your car and keep track of everywhere you go. This doesn’t violate your Fourth Amendment rights, because you do not have any reasonable expectation of privacy in your own driveway - and no reasonable expectation that the government isn’t tracking your movements.

That is the bizarre - and scary - rule that now applies in California and eight other Western states. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, which covers this vast jurisdiction, recently decided the government can monitor you in this way virtually anytime it wants - with no need for a search warrant. It is a dangerous decision - one that, as the dissenting judges warned, could turn America into the sort of totalitarian state imagined by George Orwell. It is particularly offensive because the judges added insult to injury with some shocking class bias: the little personal privacy that still exists, the court suggested, should belong mainly to the rich.

–SNIP– Plenty of liberals have objected to this kind of spying, but it is the conservative Chief Judge Kozinski who has done so most passionately. “1984 may have come a bit later than predicted, but it’s here at last,” he lamented in his dissent. And invoking Orwell’s totalitarian dystopia where privacy is essentially nonexistent, he warned: “Some day, soon, we may wake up and find we’re living in Oceania.”
