When the Archbishop Met the President

Cardinal Dolan thought he heard Barack Obama pledge respect for the Catholic Church’s rights of conscience. Then came the contraception coverage mandate.

The president of the U.S. Conference of Bishops is careful to show due respect for the president of the United States. “I was deeply honored that he would call me and discuss these things with me,” says the newly elevated Cardinal Timothy Dolan, archbishop of New York. But when Archbishop Dolan tells me his account of their discussions of the ObamaCare birth-control mandate, Barack Obama sounds imperious and deceitful to me.

Why should fat people take precedence over the elderly in the British Health Service?

Even the most sentimental champions of the NHS recognise its dark side. Given that its Chief Executive Sir David Nicholson has demanded a £20 billion efficiency saving if the NHS is to survive, and that demographic changes mean millions more elderly people will rely on its services (and space), the NHS can only do one thing: ration.

If rationing is acceptable, though, scapegoating is not. And too much evidence points to the elderly being the scapegoats in the battle to save the NHS. As the Telegraph reports today, elderly patients are being denied the best cancer care. The figures are alarming: lack of treatment is contributing to 14,000 deaths a year among the over-75s. Men and women are dying prematurely each year because their diseases are diagnosed later and less likely to be operated on.

Barack Obama’s grovelling before the Russians is an embarrassment

Ronald Reagan, together with Margaret Thatcher, stood up to Moscow, and brought the Soviet Empire to its knees. In contrast, Barack Obama has gone on his knees to grovel before the Russians. The exchange between President Obama and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev in Seoul was a display of supplication before a major strategic adversary on an issue of great importance for US national security – missile defence. The private conservation was picked up on microphone, and relayed by ABC News correspondent Jake Tapper:

Conservatives take over #ILikeObamacare

For some reason liberals keep coming up with new hashtags despite the long history of conservatives hijacking their hashtags in order to mock them. Today’s misguided attempt to establish a liberal hashtag came from President Obama himself. Apparently he wants people to tweet out why they like Obamacare.

Over-regulated America

The home of laissez-faire is being suffocated by excessive and badly written regulation

AMERICANS love to laugh at ridiculous regulations. A Florida law requires vending-machine labels to urge the public to file a report if the label is not there. The Federal Railroad Administration insists that all trains must be painted with an “F” at the front, so you can tell which end is which. Bureaucratic busybodies in Bethesda, Maryland, have shut down children’s lemonade stands because the enterprising young moppets did not have trading licences. The list goes hilariously on.

But red tape in America is no laughing matter. The problem is not the rules that are self-evidently absurd. It is the ones that sound reasonable on their own but impose a huge burden collectively. America is meant to be the home of laissez-faire. Unlike Europeans, whose lives have long been circumscribed by meddling governments and diktats from Brussels, Americans are supposed to be free to choose, for better or for worse. Yet for some time America has been straying from this ideal.

Why The 2012 Election Is Already Over

Please don’t mistake this as overconfidence, but I firmly believe what I told Michael Coren on Sun News a couple days ago: President Obama will not be reelected, will be beaten badly, and here are five reasons why….

Surprise! “Wisconsin for Falk” is government union money

Yesterday, I noted that the group “Wisconsin for Falk” began running ads against Governor Scott Walker in the forthcoming Wisconsin recall election. While “Wisconsin for Falk” sounds very much like a campaign committee for Kathleen Falk, Walker’s primary union-backed challenger, it is actually a third party group unaffiliated with Falk’s actual campaign. (Despite their ability to magically obtain video of Falk posing for them, runway-style.)

Clever: The URLs “Socialists.com” and “Communists.com” redirect to Obama campaign website

A good catch by The Daily Caller’s Caroline May: As of this morning, two provocative web addresses — Socialists.com and Communists.com — redirect to the Barack Obama campaign website. Type “Socialists.com” into your browser and you’ll swiftly be greeted with an invitation to “like” Obamacare. (Yes, that is the current landing page for Obama’s campaign site — an invitation to express support for Obamacare!)
